Others feel completely different.

Learning becomes more personal when you stop treating information as something that exists only inside textbooks.
Look for examples in your own life.

Create small areas of choice.
You might choose which example to research, which problem to investigate first, whether to learn through diagrams or written explanations, or which real-world application to explore.
If you have an assignment about climate science, perhaps you can focus on agriculture because your family works with crops.
If you need to give a presentation about technology, perhaps you can examine artificial intelligence because that topic already interests you.
You are still meeting the academic requirement.
But now part of the experience belongs to you.
Remember That Meaning Does Not Have to Equal Enjoyment
A common mistake is assuming meaningful learning should always feel exciting.
It will not.
You can understand exactly why mathematics matters to your career and still dislike solving a difficult equation at 10 p.m.
Meaning does not eliminate effort.
Instead, it gives effort a reason.
Expectancy-value theories of motivation suggest that students’ willingness to invest effort is influenced partly by whether they expect they can succeed and how much value they attach to the task.
This distinction is useful during frustrating study sessions.
Instead of asking:
“Do I enjoy doing this right now?”
Ask:
“Is there a reason this is worth doing?”
Those are very different questions.
You may not enjoy revising an essay, memorizing anatomical structures, or practising equations. Yet you may value becoming a capable writer, healthcare professional, engineer, researcher, or informed citizen.
Meaning can support persistance even when enjoyment disappears.
Create Meaning Instead of Waiting to Discover It
Students sometimes assume that interesting subjects are naturally meaningful and boring subjects simply are not.
Reality is more flexible.
Personal meaning can be developed.
You can connect material to your interests, future goals, relationships, experiences, identity, values, or problems you want to solve.

So when a subject feels disconnected, try not to stop at:
“This is boring.”

And sometimes the meaning is simply that mastering something difficult helps you become better at thinking, solving problems, or learning independently.

Finding personal meaning in what you study can transform the learning experience without requiring every subject to become your favorite.

You may still encounter boring chapters and difficult assignments. Personal meaning does not remove those challenges, but it can give you a stronger reason to work through them.
The next time you begin a topic that feels pointless, do not immediately ask, “Why do I have to study this?”
Ask instead, “Where could this fit into my life?”
Finding even one answer can completely change the way you approach the lesson.
